US stocks: S&P 500, Nasdaq end lower on first day of August

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed lower as the seasonal slow month of August begins along with the upcoming US jobs data and major companies' earnings reports. The benchmark S&P 500 is less than 5% from breaching its record high closing level notched on Jan. 3, 2022.
